Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Advanced numerical modelling for understanding, predicting and improving fluid-flow and thermal systems. ALTWHIZ uses CFD as an engineering decision tool—not as an isolated simulation deliverable.

Problems we solve

CFD work at ALTWHIZ focuses on the fluid-flow behaviour that shapes an engineering choice: distribution, recirculation, pressure loss, transport and coupled thermal effects. Geometry, operating conditions and boundary assumptions are compared so the result can support design or experimental planning.

  • Understand flow distribution, recirculation, pressure loss and transport mechanisms.
  • Compare concepts or geometries before committing to physical prototypes.
  • Investigate coupled fluid-flow and thermal behavior.
  • Identify sensitivity to operating conditions, geometry or boundary assumptions.
  • Interpret discrepancies between expected, simulated and experimental behavior.

Technical capabilities

  • Model formulation and physics selection
  • Laminar and application-appropriate flow analysis
  • Coupled fluid flow and heat transfer
  • Multiphysics problem definition
  • Geometry and boundary-condition review
  • Mesh and numerical-convergence strategy
  • Parametric and sensitivity studies
  • Model verification and validation planning
  • Post-processing and mechanism interpretation
  • Engineering recommendations based on simulation results

Our approach

We begin with the physical question and the decision the model must support. From there we define the minimum sufficient model, identify assumptions and measurable quantities, establish verification/validation logic, and only then build the numerical workflow.

Results are interpreted in physical terms: why the behavior occurs, what variables control it, how confident we should be, and what the model implies for design or experimentation.

For industrial and scientific technology teams, CFD is one discipline within Advanced Engineering & R&D.

Technical foundation

ALTWHIZ is led by Sanjeev Kumar, PhD, whose engineering background includes fluid mechanics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, numerical modelling and CFD. His doctoral work involved a 3D coupled fluid-flow and heat-transfer model implemented in COMSOL and quantitative validation against microgravity experiments supported by ESA and CNES.
