Challenge & context

The research addressed sessile-drop evaporation on a heated substrate under microgravity. The work required a three-dimensional numerical representation of coupled fluid flow and heat transfer and quantitative comparison with experimental observations.

The numerical model evolved alongside the experimental understanding, supporting interpretation, prediction and extrapolation rather than serving as an isolated simulation result.

Contribution

Sanjeev Kumar developed and adapted a 3D numerical model in COMSOL, analysed the computations, contributed to experimental design/modification and technical recommendations, and reported progress in the ESA/CNES-supported research context.

Approach & capabilities

  • Coupled fluid-flow and heat-transfer modelling
  • COMSOL-based numerical implementation
  • Quantitative model/experiment comparison
  • Predictive modelling and extrapolation
  • Experimental design/modification input
  • Technical reporting and presentation

Outcome / evidence

The work produced a validated modelling framework used to interpret and predict thermal-fluid behaviour in the research program. ESA and CNES are referenced only as research-support context, not as ALTWHIZ commercial clients.
